So I'm giving Linux another go and this time around Ubuntu seems much more stable. I love the Windows based installer. It makes me feel safe from borking my working OS.

Linux is great and most of the tools I use work on Linux as well as Windows, however I am missing Photoshop :(. As much as I love the Gimp's attempt, there is no comparison.

I'm also trying to get used to the GNU tool chain. Until now I have developed entirely inside an IDE like Visual Studio or Eclipse. While Eclipse and Netbeans are great IDEs I have used in the past, I decided to get back to basics and try and live without certain features like code completion and integrated debugging.

In this screenshot you can see my GNU compliant C/C++ 'IDE'. SciTE is my new favourite editor. It took me a while to configure it to my liking and write a dark theme for it so I don't burn my eyes out when coding in the dark.

I'm still working on my game engine project. It hasn't gone away. I am in the process of completing the setup of my build environment with libraries, etc. Before moving to Ubuntu, I was in the middle of designing/implementing a GUI system so that I could create a level editor. However, this sub-project may die because there is much more work involved than I originally anticipated.

I should probably stop writing before this turns into a full-blown journal entry.

GIMP alone can't really replace Photoshop, but along with Inkscape, you will get closer. Try it :)
